Mary Ellen Chott-Mahre Memorial Scholarship names Athena Scarlet Kristin Schlyer as 2011 Recipient
YAKIMA, WA – The Central Washington Catholic Foundation (CWCF) announces that Athena Scarlet Kristin Schlyer of Leavenworth has been named the 2011 Mary Ellen Chott-Mahre Scholarship recipient.
Schlyer is a graduate of Cascade High School and plans on attending Carroll College in the fall. In addition, she is an honor roll student and the associated student body school president, national honor society school chapter president, vice president of the Future Business Leaders of America and Senate Page for Senator Linda Evans-Parlette.
The Mary Ellen Chott-Mahre Memorial Scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Mary Ellen Chott-Mahre and is funded by her husband David R. Mahre and their nine children. While suffering with terminal cancer, Mary asked her family to establish a perpetual scholarship to benefit area high school graduates and help Catholic students in our area attend a Catholic college or university.
The scholarship award varies from year-to-year depending on market fluctuations and fund size. Presently, an award winner can expect $1,000 to $6,000 awarded annually. The Central Washington Catholic Foundation is the sole governing body awarding the Chott-Mahre Scholarship.
Qualifications for the Chott-Mahre Scholarship are that the recipient be a participating member of the Roman Catholic Community, planning or presently attending an accredited Catholic college or university, and living in Benton, Chelan, Douglas, Grant, Kittitas, Klickitat, or Yakima counties with a preference going to an applicant graduating from Naches Valley School District who attends St. John Church in Naches, WA.
Any student awarded the Chott-Mahre Scholarship for one year, and keeps a least a 3.0 GPA throughout the academic year, may reapply for up to a total of three additional years. The student would then become the preferred candidate.
